Date/Time: Wednesday, September 7th, 6:30pm.
Location: Tutee's home, West Pensacola Street
Topic/Skill: Writing (alphabet, numbers), recall, vocabulary.
Tiba is still working out the order and sounds of the alphabet, so that was our primary focus. We also used flashcards, worksheets, and word searches to cover numbers, shapes, and colors. Afterward we had about five minutes left, so we went through a list of animals that I asked her to identify. All of these are truly basic concepts, but we are working through the foundation level of Bloom's taxonomy: defining, duplicating, listing, memorizing, repeating, and stating.
Feedback provided to tutee: I attempted to learn a bit of Swahili so I can let Tiba know how she's doing and give simple directions. Feedback is still gently corrective, and the main goal is encouragement. Since she shows some ability in reading, I encouraged her to try dividing larger words into smaller parts, and then try to sound them out. I also allowed her time to find her own mistakes, which she did quite well.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Tiba shows a great capacity to focus when she can adequately comprehend the objective. The importance of the order of learning became apparent as we worked on the word searches I'd prepared. Except for visuals, I didn't have access to the language necessary to explain what to do, and she was understandably lost at first. It felt like I was rushing ahead a bit, pushing her toward application when she's still working on comprehension. In the future I will be more diligent about adhering to the order of the learning process, and preparing better examples.
