Serena CO#3

Date/Time: September 7th 1:00-1:50pm

Topic/Skill: Speaking/ Group 3

Teacher Presentation: Originally I signed up to observe Ryan's class but accidentally sat through Isaiah's class instead. Isaiah began the class by introducing the debate activity that the class participated in.

Classroom Management: Isaiah organized the class into two separate debate groups, assigned roles to each individual, and allowed the students to prepare for the discussion. He told them that he would record the discussion and count it as a quiz grade to ensure they took the activity seriously.

Materials: Isaiah printed out slips of paper with the pros and cons already highlighted on each slip so that the students could use the information for their debate. He also used different websites over the projector; one website was a "popular debate ideas" site which he used to introduce the topics that the students were debating, the other site was called "wheel decide" which he used to make sure the group that went first was random.

Student Participation: Students were recorded and required to speak at least twice during the debate.

Feedback Provided: While the students were in the middle of their debate, Isaiah would periodically interject to add teaching points. He taught them how to ask other students to re-explain or repeat certain points if they didn't understand. He also explained to the students the proper way to change one's own opinion if they agreed with another person's argument.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Isaiah did a good job picking topics that were appealing to the students. As they were debating it seemed like a natural discussion and this really allowed them to practice speaking skills in a realistic way. I also appreciated the way Isaiah went about creating a comfortable environment for the students by reminding them not to be nervous because they were just talking with their friends.
