My 2nd CT and I are off to a nice start. He's a bright little guy who is apparently knowledgeable about animals and insects. To start, I needed some information about his present reading level in order to know how best to utilize his time. First, we started our session with a sight word review (high frequency). By the end of his first grade year, he is expected to know approximately 190 words with automaticity. Out of the 60 we covered, he missed 5. He is definitely on track for meeting this first grade expectation and some. Next, he was given a first grade reading fluency check to see how many words per minutes (wpm) he reads. His first cold read was 43wpm. After he and I read the passage together and he answered some comprehension questions about the passage, I gave him a second read. He read 58 wpm. At the end of first grade, he is expected to read 85 wpm. The reading passages will become increasingly more difficult, but I believe this little guy will be up for the challenge. Then, we did a phonics exercise on ai and ay. This exercise was slightly challenging because he would forget the rule about how the short a sound could be made with two letters also. With a little more practice, he'll get it. Finally, we read his Accelerated Reader (AR) book, "All About Baby Wild Animals." He had patiently waited for this moment. He and I took turns reading a page. I would ask him questions about what was read and his responses were always correct. I closed our session with a quick look of some animal flashcards and the fly came up. One of the facts were flies lived for 31 days. My CT added that fruit flies lived for 50 days. If that is true or not I don't know, but my little guy was adamant that that was the case. There was no argument from me. He and I both agreed that whatever the flies' life span is, its a nasty bug.
