Today was a blast. This little group of tutees has two kindergartners and one first grader. The kindergartners are girls and the first grader is a boy. One of the kinders is from Spain and the other is from Kuwait. The first grader was born in America, but his parents are of Mexican descent. After I collected the children from their designated pick-up area, I gave them a brief chill and snack moment. Then, we began our working fun. They were happy participants. Our session went as follows.
Warm-up Activities-
The students identified flashcards that depicted verbs (jump, run, swim, hop, stomp, turn, fly, ride).
Each student was given the opportunity to act out the verb when asked, "Can you..., or What can you do"? They would respond by saying, "I can..." along with the verb and the action. They also enjoyed learning, singing, and acting out the "What Can You Do?" song.
Practice-
They completed two practice worksheet independently that required them to identity, in limited writing, what they can do. The students were provided a reader, "I Can." With the reader, they had to look at the pictures in the book and associate a verb with the action in the picture. Next, we read the reader together, and they had to identity the action verb for each sentence.
Wrap-up Activity-
They were eagerly wanting to read their readers again, so we read a couple of pages. They were asked to circle the action verb in the sentence. They were encouraged to finish this task once they returned home. We ended our session with singing and acting the "What Can You Do?" song. Once dismissed, they excitedly shared their experience with their waiting parents.
Next session-
A review question- What can you do? They will be expected to say, "I can..." or they can act it out.
