Serena TS#4

Date/Time: September 7th 7:30-8:20pm

Location: PJ's desk

Topic/Skill: Science/reading

Feedback provided to tutee: As PJ read aloud I corrected him any time he mispronounced a word. I would also point to a section for him to read when he asked a question in which I knew the answer was found within the reading. After he read different sections I had him explain the ideas back to me to make sure that he truly comprehended what he read.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: After feedback from Professor Kim that the last session was tough for PJ, I focused on trying to understand PJ better and meet him more on his level. I let him take the reigns more on what topics we learned about from each of the science books and then made a discussion out of it. He had a very strong interest in the projects that were found in the books, so I let him read through several different projects. By the end he decided he was most interested in the magnetic crane and volcano projects. Therefore we ended the session by performing a mock version of this experiment in the bathroom using baking soda and vinegar. Then I told him that next time we can do the magnetic crane project. It was really fun to see his excitement and interest by being able to learn in a hands-on way. Though I'm still learning, I feel like I am gaining a better understanding as to how to be more effective with PJ and his preferred style of learning.
