Alyssa TS #1

Date/Time: August 30 7-8pm

Location: Georgette’s home

Topic/Skill: Baseline Assessment, Alphabet, Colors

Feedback provided to tutee:

I congratulated her on what English she already knows and I tried my best to be overly happy when she improved during the lesson. I think she reacts well to positive actions so I am trying to send her good vibes to help her associate speaking English with a good feeling.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:

I learned that it is very hard to communicate with someone when neither of you can speak the other language. Usually when I talk with someone I know at least a few words in their language but I cannot speak a word of Swahili and it makes me sad that I cannot communicate with her. Georgette is a very sweet girl and is very eager to please me. She often tries to read my face for answers instead of trying to think and recall from her memory. I am going to work on keeping a poker face so she has to think very carefully. Also, I saw her schoolwork and it made me sad. I realize that there are very few Swahili speakers in Tallahassee, let alone proper teachers but she is simply writing down notes of words and concepts she has no way of understanding and even though it may be socializing her with American children at this point I don't understand fully why she is in a regular middle school.
