Topic/Skill: Holidays, Business, Culture/Speaking & Listening
Feedback provided to tutee: During this tutoring session we began by talking about Labor Day and comparing and contrasting different American holidays to Korean holidays. We only talked about Halloween and Christmas before we ended up talking about difference in culture within the work environment. I explained that in America there is a much smaller power difference than in Korea. We also talked about similarity in workplace politics in each of our cultures. During this I explained the concept of nepotism to him, while he explained the terms 금수저 and 흙수저 to me.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: At the end of the session I checked with Dojun and asked if he feels like the structure of the tutoring sessions have been beneficial or if he preferred me to have more structured lessons. He felt that the way that we have been talking has been helpful. The sessions consist of conversations on different aspects of culture and applicable real life topics specifically business-related, and then throughout the conversation I use gaps in understanding as opportunities to teach. I enjoyed the naturalness of our conversation and at the same time I felt like he was constantly learning and I was even able to learn from him.
