Lesson(s) about tutoring
and/or the tutee you learned:
I spent the
first session of tutoring with Seo Yeon getting to know her and some of her
goals for the semester. One of the first questions I asked after a general
introduction was what she wanted to focus on during tutoring. Seo Yeon really wanted
to work on grammar and speaking skills. Because it was only the second day of
classes for the CIES students Seo Yeon didn’t have any specific tutoring
questions, she was more interesting in learning about Tallahassee and FSU. I
decided to take her on a walking tour of the campus and show her some new
things. After the walking tour we were able to sit down and talk for a little bit
about what its like to move form South Korea to the United States. It was
interesting to see how she would stop and think for a second about how to
correctly structure a sentence before speaking. Overall she was very smooth in
her speaking with only some difficulty pronouncing and understanding words that
were new to her. Next week I plan to evaluate Seo Yeon grammar level by having
her complete some worksheets to better understand exactly what grammar level
she is at.
