Date/Time: August 29, 9:00-9:50am
Topic/Skill: Grammar 4A
Teacher Presentation: Calyn Stringer
Materials: Present Perfect Review handout
Student Participation: The lesson began with three students each sharing a story in front of the class about themselves. Throughout the lesson Calyn had students work in pairs as each topic was introduced or reviewed. Then as a class she would prompt participation by either presenting "beautiful mistakes" for the class to correct or by letting the students explain the concepts that were being taught.
Feedback Provided: I thoroughly enjoyed observing the 4A Grammar class. I thought the structure of the lesson provided a very smooth learning experience for the students. I definitely saw how the class was student-centered through the constant student-student and student-teacher interaction. Throughout the class, the students probably did 80-90% of the talking which kept them engaged the whole time.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I walked with Calyn to her office after class and picked her brain on the preparation and thought process that goes into each of her lesson plans. I asked her how much of the lesson she takes directly from their textbook and how much she develops on her own. Then she gave me some ideas of how she structures each lesson plan as well as different suggestions for in-class activities. She showed me how she would include estimated time frames for each section of her lesson in her outline.
