For my first session with my child tutee, I decided to try
Rosetta Stone. The app would say a basic phrase accompanied by a photo. I would
have the student listen to the phrases and then repeat them before he clicked
on the correct photo that made the sentence true. While he repeated the
phrases, I noted some errors. He mostly omitted articles, pronouns, and verbs
such as the, are, he, is and they. When I heard errors, I would restate the
sentence and have him repeat. For sentences he struggled to say after a few
attempts, I would break down the sentence into smaller chunks and have him
repeat after me. He had some trouble saying
words like girl so during the session we focused on these words more. I created sentences using the words he
struggled with most to encourage more practice.
By the end of the session, he was still omitting some words in his
sentences.
