Ben TS #6

I had gotten some advice from my friend who is a 1st grade teacher on tutoring Shukuru my refugee tutee this past Sunday. She happens to have two Congolese refugees in her class this year. She suggested a very useful website called starfall.com. I am really impressed by this website and think it would be incredibly useful for absolute beginner English learners. It has interactive picture books in which you can click on a word and have it sounded out syllable by syllable. It also has exercises which focus on individual syllables matched with consonants. It is too bad that Shukuru does not have wifi in his home as it requires an internet connection. My friend suggested I teach Shukuru the calendar as this is a useful skill to know. In order to get Shukuru to being able to know the calendar I started off my session with a half hour of using numbers flash cards. He is quite adept with numbers 1-10. I had flash cards up to the number 25. 11-25 was a challenge for him but doable. At the end of the lesson we used Starfall.com which he really liked. I plan on using starfall in future lessons as a reward at the end of the lesson, and also introduce the calendar to him.
