August 31
On this day, I observed Ryan
Flemming’s class. I really admire his teaching style. He’s extremely good at
pointing out and quickly correcting any “beautiful mistakes” any of the
students happen to make. One of the things he did was quickly type up the
sentence on the projector and color-code the errors as red and the rest in a
large black text. The students were encouraged to repeat after him. He was a
good advocate that group work really does work because each student was
actively participating. His speech rate was level appropriate for students of
upper intermediate. One thing I noticed as well is his use of body language to
convey any message. He never looks closed-off in any way and tries to be as inviting
as possible to his students. That kind of thinking makes sense because it allows
students to be more open with him (for example, they don’t feel embarrassed or
ashamed to make mistakes in front of him). His activity was very engaging and
the students looked excited to do storytelling with each other and at the same
time, they were practicing their English in a low-controlled manner.
