I
met with Matthew on the 5th in the afternoon. He seems to be
adjusting to his new school fairly well. However, it is evident that he has
entered the public school education system. His homework has shifted from
teacher designed online lessons using Quizlet to a generic workbook. He also
has much more homework than he had previously. It is centered around reading passages
and being able to pull out the key points.
I have noticed that Matthew has issues
doing this easily. I think it is because he skims the text too quickly and doesn’t
know to look for key words to help him zero in on the answer. I tried to work
with him on this issue by analyzing the question with him, picking out the
important words and looking for them in the text. Once we did this a few times
he seemed to get be able to understand the questions faster and answer them
quicker.
We were only able to do half of the
packet. Luckily it was not due until the Friday after our next meeting. He was
very diligent in trying to finish as much as he could, saying, “I’ll do the
short answer ones first since I don’t like them”. I thought that was very
studious of him and was proud.
