Remi TS #16

I met with Shu on Friday the 21st after our Japanese conversation table. After having thought about the needs analysis that I had given him last time I decided to choose a listening from storycorps.org instead of NPR. This was we could listen to a story from people who didn’t have the average accent and speaking habits that Shu was used to. We listened to a story about a young African American man who had recently been released from jail and was dealing with the ramifications of having that on his record.

I think it resonated with Shu because the man in the story had a 3-year-old son, the same age as Shu’s son, whom he had to provide for. Overall I think this made Shu more interested in this man’s story. After analyzing the story with a bottom-up process, Shu initiated a conversation about the man’s background and his struggles. This was followed by a short explanation of the division of crimes between felonies and misdemeanors. Overall he did have some difficulty understanding what was being said but he did much better than I expected.
