I met with Ali for the second time this past Monday. He had just gone to
his first fsu football game that weekend. We talked about sports culture in
Tallahassee compared to in his hometown in Saudi Arabia. He is in a smaller
city and as such they have a soccer team which doesn’t do very well and there
isn’t a lot of fan support for the team. Contrastingly, he really enjoys the
football culture in Tallahassee where there are so many people who root for the
Seminoles, our home team. We also talked about the differences in sports
culture in our grade schools in the two countries. He said that in Saudi Arabia
people look at sports to be a waste of time for their children to participate
in. I asked him if he disagreed with that and he said yes, and that he wants
for his kid to have something outside of school to participate in and he sees
sports as a great way to do that.
