Soongyu and I met outside Strozier once again to have our first timed speaking focused session. This was one of the things she was hoping to improve on from the initial needs analysis. We went through about ten prompts with topics sourced from a TOEFL practice website. Prompts ranged from who the speaker thinks is a famous historical figure in their home country, to whether the speaker would prefer to live in the mountains or by the sea. There were a couple of times when Soongyu became frustrated and wanted to quit before or after time was up, but a little encouragement helped her to finish her thoughts despite the time. At the end, I brought up that she had shaved about thirty seconds off of her overall response time, hoping that this evidence of progress would encourage her. I learned a lot about Soongyu just by giving her prompts to which I was interested to hear her response. This session also helped me realize that in the future it might be better to write down each response time so that the evidence of progress is clear and concrete.
