Serena TS#14

Date/Time: October 12, 10:00-11:00am

Location: CIES

Topic/Skill: scientific method, geography idioms/ writing, reading, listening

Feedback provided to tutee: I reassured PJ's mom that his low scores aren't due to his lack of knowledge but rather his impatience and lack of attention as he rushes through most of the questions on his assignments.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Today PJ and I began the session by performing a simplified version of a dissolving salt experiment he had done in class. I think the hands-on and visual aids helped him answer all the assignment's questions with ease. I think the biggest lesson I learned about tutoring from this session is the importance of understanding a student's learning style and tailoring the teaching style accordingly. PJ gets distracted easily therefore he seems to dislike reading and writing the most because it requires the most attention. However, when the same information is presented verbally or he can respond verbally, he shows a much greater understanding of the material. Therefore, in order to go over the geography test that he did poorly on, I asked him all the questions orally. He answered them all correctly, though a few he still missed on the first try.
