My conversational partner and I met at Starbucks today and
this time I felt that I was doing most of the talking. We got on the topic of education and
discussed the differences between the education system in Turkey and the
education system in America. The
differences were astounding. In Turkey, it
seems teachers are valued more. The
government also finds job opportunities for new and old teachers and places
them where they are needed. On the other hand, in America, teachers must apply
to jobs and some end up not being able to find any work resulting in them
working in a different field. My
conversational partner mentioned how teachers are paid well in Turkey, which is
also contrary to a teacher’s salary in America.
We discussed similarities like grade levels and the ages when students
typically enter college. Before today,
Turkey was not a country on the top of my list of places to visit but after
today, its up there. I am also interested in possibly teaching there.
