Life is a funny thing sometimes. After our last meeting in
which we discussed IAT's, my professor brought them up in our next class. For
this reason, I ended up taking the race test myself before Soongyu and I's next
meeting. I told her that I was pleased in my results, but I am afraid that most
people will always have biases that they don't realize or fully control.
Soongyu said that she knew of a scholar who discovered in his studies that
older children tend to be more bias than younger children. She said that this
was due to the increase in the exposure and influence of prejudices. This meant
that the children were implicitly learning these biases through social
institutions and interactions. This lead us to begin discussing the current
state of the election and the biases that people have been having lately
towards others both domestic and international. Our conversation extended to the
topic of Syrian refugees before our time ended. It has been extremely pleasant
having such profound conversations with Soongyu. I truly respect her intelligence
and views on life’s tough questions.
