Lesson: Diagnostics and Basic Conversation Skills
I met Nestor for the first time today! Nestor and his family are from the DRC and they just moved to this country recently. During this first lesson I just wanted to get a feel for where Nestor was at. Nestor can read and write fairly well. At the least he can decode letters. Together we went through basic conversational phrases which he understood fairly quickly. I had Nestor fill in introduction conversations with his name and my name and then I had him repeat them back to me. Then we practiced introducing ourselves and we switched who went first and second every time. I then began to test his basic vocabulary knowledge. His vocabulary is limited, but he knows the words that are most useful to him (such as hello, mom, dad, food, etc.).
There was a weird moment in the middle of the tutoring session where Nestor's parents just left me alone with him and his brothers and sisters. I wasn't really sure what to do so I stayed for a little while after my session to ensure that the children weren't left alone. While we waited I taught Nestor some new vocabulary mainly consisting of items around his house. His parents finally returned home about 15 minutes after my session was supposed to end. I emailed Una and she said not to worry about leaving on time at the next session.
