Since my tutee is one of my students, I am lucky enough to
have assessments that I can use to gauge where he is academically and know what
skills he needs to work on. Interacting with him on a daily basis also aides my
lesson planning for our sessions. After
giving the first math test, it was clear my tutee needed help recognizing numbers
and number words in English. I began the
lesson by providing my tutee with manipulatives. We used colorful wooden numbers and blocks to
order the numbers. Before we ordered the
numbers, we counted the blocks and made sets up to five. I counted with him and assisted him in
placing the numbers in the correct order for the first round. For the following
round, I collected the blocks but left the numbers in order. I had my tutee count out the right amount of
blocks for each number. Finally, I mixed
up the numbers, collected the blocks, and had him order the numbers and count
out the correct amount for each. Once we completed those three rounds, I
introduced the number words. We placed
each word under the correct number as we read them aloud. I would read the word first and have him
repeat after me. After several more
hands on tasks, I had my tutee trace each number word and draw the appropriate
amount of circles next to each word he traced. To conclude, I gathered the
number words printed on strips of paper. As we walked around the room counting
objects, I had my tutee place the correct number word next to the objects we
had counted. He enjoyed the kinesthetic
aspect of this lesson.
