My tutee and I met at Starbucks for our second session
today. After ordering our drinks, he
told me he would like to simply talk about anything I wanted to talk about and
correct him as we conversed. I decided
to take this opportunity to ask my tutee about his home country since I knew
nothing about Libya. He informed me
about the political instability currently happening in his country. We also spoke about the differences in the
holidays that we celebrate in America compared to those celebrated in
Libya. For instance, here we celebrate
Thanksgiving and Christmas but in Libya they do not. He mentioned two festivals called Eid al-Fitr
and Eid al-Adha. One is to celebrate the
end of Ramadan and the other is the feast of sacrifice. They each last several days. What blew me away most was the fact that
during each festival, the people of Libya celebrate communally. They visit family around the towns and are
required to give donations to help those less fortunate. They also feed the homeless and give them
gifts. After today’s session, I am
extremely interested in visiting Libya and experiencing these festivals.
