Lauren TS#5

Many of my students have been struggling with the concept of greater than and less than.  When observing the students during group work, I notice my tutee does not understand when I explain the directions in English.  Even when placing emphasis on whether the question is asking for them to identify the set that is greater than or less than, my tutee chooses the same amount.  As a result, I decided to focus on these terms with him.  Today I focused on greater than.  First I introduced the term and showed my tutee examples of what number is greater than when comparing to another number.  I also defined greater than as having more.  I created some flashcards with drawings of objects for each number.  Each side of the card had a different number.  As we went through the flashcards, I asked my tutee to count each set of objects drawn on the cards.  He would tell me how many on each side and then choose which side had more.  After going through the stack of flashcards, we practiced with manipulatives like counting dinosaurs and teddy bears.  I would grab a specific amount of teddy bears and he would have to provide a greater amount.
