Danielle TS#12
On 10/12, I met with Astin again for his next tutoring session. This time, we read a couple of books. One of which was a level above his reading ability, and so we spent most of the time working through that together. He generally does very well with reading, but this seemed a little bit difficult for him. A pattern of his that I noticed is that he tends to get the word right, but won't pronounce the conjugated ending. For example, he will say 'look' when it actually says 'looked' or 'looks.' He does this quite often, and I have been trying to get him in the habit of pronouncing the endings. I don't exactly know why he does this, because some times when I stop him and make him back track, he will quickly glance at the word and pronounce it correctly. He's been getting better, but he still does it a lot and that definitely needs improvement. Another aspect of reading that he struggles with is sounding out words. Sometimes he gets the word, but other times he makes the sound of each letter individually and then tries to combine them. I've been trying to get him to break unfamiliar words down by syllables, as I believe that might help him more. However, I think this is typical behavior for a six-year-old who is learning to read for the first time, especially one that is bilingual in two completely different phonetic/alphabet systems.
