Danielle TS#9

On 9/28, I met with Astin again for another tutoring session at the library. I talked with his mother at the beginning for a few minutes, and she said that she would like if I could work on spelling with Astin this session. She handed me a list of all the vocabularly words he has been tested on in school and we spent most of the time on those words. He did a good job overall.  However, he did get discouraged easily if he couldn't get the word quickly. I gave him a lot of encouragement and helped him sound out the words he had trouble with. We were reviewing words he had already been tested on, and he was confused as to why. So I had to explain to him that it's important to review material you've already been tested on, especially spelling words, so you don't forget what you learned. He seemed to understand, but still complained a little bit about it. We played a spelling game where I would write down a list of nine letters, and he had to make as many words as he can with them. This was challenging for him, but he said that he really enjoyed it.  We did two rounds of that before moving on. Next, we read a book like we always do, and he did a great job. Reading is defintely something he's good at, but he has the habit of making up words to replace the words he's unfamiliar with. I'm working with him to try to break that habit by sounding out the words instead.
