Diego CO#2

8 September

On this day, I observed Candace Warmka’s class. The first thing I noticed is how flawless her rate of speech is. She creates a welcoming environment in her classroom and the students very obviously feel comfortable with her. Her main activity was a game of Taboo basically. The students had to help their team members guess the word and write it down (without any spelling errors) on the whiteboard by using the definitions and any synonyms they could think of. She styled it in the form of a race so the students were very engaged in trying to beat the other team. She made sure every student was taking part in the activity and she was noting which words gave students the biggest problems.

During her vocabulary, she selected words but when she realized one of them was note a very commonly used phrase in conversational English, she dropped them. She was trying to get the students to use language that is popular and necessary in both academic and casual use.

When running her classroom, she is very firm when it comes to time restrictions and dates. And although she is extremely humorous and keeps her classroom light, her control of the classroom never falters. This is actually something I’m worried about when becoming a teacher because I worry that if I try to be fun or engaging with my students, I’ll lose their attention or they won’t properly grasp the material. It’s very nice to see someone do both so effortlessly.
