PJ definitely is doing better with word problems lately. His homework has improved. Every time we start a new problem, he automatically reads it out loud. Then he repeats back what he is supposed to find. He has a habit of telling me "I'm supposed to multiply" or "I'm supposed to divide, right?" when he finds the important keywords in his problem.
One of the words he has gotten better at identifying is every time he sees the word "each" or "equally" he can identify that as dividing. This week's session took most of the time on his homework but we kept singling out specific words that meant divide or multiply. It really helps to physically show him what multiplying and dividing by using objects in the room or objects that are more familiar to him.
One example is that one problem was trying to divide trading cards equally among pages in a collector's book. He didn't understand was "6 remainder 4" meant in terms of pages in a book so I asked him if he had any trading cards. He happily showed me his Pokémon cards and once I showed him what it meant using his own cards, he understood it completely. And because he knew how to do that problem (and finally understood what a remainder number was), he completed the last two problems easily.
Unfortunately, we didn't have time for our game but I'm aiming to do it next week if we have time.
