I congratulated Jimin for advancing to a higher level for each of the English topics. She is very smart and a very hardworking individual.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
This session I tried to focus on listening. I had four clips prepared for Jimin: two from The Simpsons, one from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and one from The Nanny. We started with The Simpsons first, and the clips were no longer than two minutes. I gave a little background information for each clip, and no script was provided. Jimin watched the clip, explained to me what happened in the clip, listened to it again, and provided me with more information she missed the first time. The next clip she listened to was The Nanny one. She listened to it but could not understand because the speech rate was too fast. I then assumed that the Fresh Prince clip would be too difficult as well. So instead of those two clips, we listened to two songs, one by Beyonce and another by Janet Jackson, and she followed the song with the lyrics. Lyrics contain a lot of metaphors, similies, and other figurative language, so she had a lot of questions about the meaning of the lyrics. I also think she enjoyed the songs as well. The last ten minutes of the session I asked her about our tutoring sessions: What do you like most? like least? What was favorite activity? Least favorite? What would you like to see more of? As a tutor, what are some things that I can improve on? I should have asked these questions after the first few sessions, but better late than never. She didn't really say anything too bad about our sessions (maybe out of politeness), but I still think she was pretty honest with me. Next time I should probably print out the questions for her to read. Since she was waiting for her father, I waited with her and we talked about language differences, driving, and YouTube videos.
