Today Mei and I had an early lunch at the Hobbit. We split a
serving of chicken wings and talked about sauces, football, and meal habits in
our respective cultures. I learned that Mei enjoys really spicy foods and does
not like sweet, so she got wings with spicy sauce and I got barbeque. We
laughed over my intolerance to spicy foods when she suggested I try one of
hers. We also talked about the various games that were playing on the TVs in
the restaurant and how we weren’t really into football. From this outing, we
both learned something about meal habits from each of our cultures. In Mei’s
culture, one does not completely finish a meal. If one finishes a meal
completely, that suggests to the host that they did not provide enough food.
Alternatively, for me if one does not finish the meal it is seen as one not liking
the food. I had never given much thought to this until Mei had pointed it out.
