During this session, Nattaya told me that she plans to take
the TOEFL exam in November and has been practicing for the exam using practice
books/exams. I took some time to look through her practice books and look at
the questions she would often miss. When I asked her what caused her the most
trouble, she told me that she did not have good time management and that practices
that were supposed to take 20 minutes would take her 40 minutes. Because of
this, I decided to time one of her practice exams. I reassured her that she
should do her best and that we would go over the answers afterwards. After the
20 minutes, Nattaya had only completed half the questions. When we went over
them I asked her why she circled and underlined words. I also asked her to
explain why she answered certain questions the way she did. I found that she
did not fully read the choices but would skim them and then search the text for
anything that seemed closest to an answer even if it was wrong. From here, I
gave her some study tips on how to read questions, look for answers, and make
sure she had enough time.
