Location: Skype
Today I had my Skype tutoring with Dojun. This was an interesting conversation! We went over the topic of weddings, because he was going to a wedding later that day. We talked about different marriage traditions in the different cultures. This was very interesting, he spent a lot of time going over gifts. He said that in South Korea, the guests typically give money as gifts to the bride and groom, and that the amount should be based on how close you are to them. He said that there are certain increments that the amount should follow, so like, someone that is not attending the wedding should send them about $30, someone that is attending but does not know them well should give $50, and it goes up to $70, $100, $120, and $150+. He said that generally you should do one of these numbers, and not something in between like $40 or $80. He said that there is a saying that older people say that you should get married as young as possible, so you know what others think about how close you are and will know what to give them at their weddings. He said this funny thing about how sometimes, the amount is not reciprocated properly and how peoples feelings get hurt. Overall, I'm glad he got in all the speaking practice. We hit all the words that I wanted him to learn on the topic.
