Location: ONYX Apartments
Topic/Skill: Review of Past Simple, Note-taking Shorthand, Pronunciation P vs B
Feedback provided to tutee: Turky seems to have improved with his mastery of the past simple, but he did lose the flashcards I made for him somehow. I encourage him to keep practicing and keep studying. I hope to keep his morale high so that he will keep seeking extra help. I gave him a worksheet to practice the past simple again with irregular verbs in order to make sure he really remembers them.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
After I observed Turky in his class I noticed that he doesn't put as much effort into learning English as the other students did. He zoned out and did not pay attention and then tried to get the answers from his friends. He does sort of the same thing in our sessions. He will pull out his phone and try to look up a word rather than ask me. He will take/make phone calls during our session. Moreover, when I know he hasn't studied or is confused he tries to look at the written answers on paper and then pretends like he wasn't trying to cheat. I need to figure out a way to motivate him into actually trying to learn English. I know he is here for a year and it would be a waste for him to not try harder. It makes me feel ineffective as a tutor because my times with Georgette are so productive and engaging because she is excited to learn whereas Turky is apathetic. I am determined to help him better his studying skills and English proficiency.
