Ben CO #3

CO#3
I observed a reading level 3 class. The class started with students reading a text in order to answer some comprehension questions about it. Students wrote their answers to the questions, which were open-ended but students were asked to reference the text. Students were given 30 minutes to read and answer questions and if they were done they were asked to summarize the text. The teacher made a great suggestion for students who struggle with copying the text word for word which I think is worth remembering. The suggestion is that if you struggle with plagiarism, first try summarizing the text in your native language and then use that summary to write a summary in English. Pretty clever! I noted that while students were quietly being busy writing and reading she would periodically give suggestions to the class or answer individual’s questions. She told the class that there are two things that group 3 readers struggle with: Plagiarizing and not being able to find the main idea of the text. The post-activity was fun. She read aloud from a Ramona book, which I think I have a new love for as an adult. I can appreciate the quality of the writing more as an adult. I noted that she was very enthusiastic and lively in her reading which made it enjoyable for the students. She periodically paused to ask comprehension and contextual vocab questions for just a few seconds or so and then went back on to reading. Overall it was an enjoyable class.
