TS #10
Day/Time: October 5 4:30 PM
Location: Albert’s House
Topic: Getting to know you/Alphabet
This Wednesday 10/5 I met with Albert instead of Shukuru. Shukuru’s family moved to Iowa. It sounded like from Una that there is a large Congo population in Iowa and that his family knew someone where they were moving which is good. My new tutee is Albert and he is in second grade while Shukuru was in 6th. Naturally it is a little bit different teaching someone younger. He and his older brother and sister were all in the room with me during the tutoring session, sometimes offering their own contributions.

We started off with making Albert’s name using flash cards. It didn’t
seem like he knew the letters too well past A. So we then practiced the ABC
song for a bit. I brought a alphabet workbook along and we did some practice of
writing uppercase A,B, and C. The practice is useful because he is currently
not able to write these letters well on his own and needs to trace still. I
think it was useful practice but it wasn’t the most fun and so I will keep
written exercises short in the future to meet the intrinsic needs of a 2nd
grader.
