I met with Albert, my second grade refugee tutee for the second time. My old tutee, Shukuru, who was a sixth-grader, had abruptly moved to Iowa. I had bought a alphabet workbook for Shukuru which was skill-appropriate but not so much age-appropriate so I didn’t get much use out of it with him. I was very happy to see that this same alphabet workbook works out great for Albert! In the last session I had Albert draw some letters which he struggled with even when he could copy a letter that he was looking at. This workbook has pre-writing exercises where he gets to draw a line from a letter to a basic noun that the letter starts with. For instance, M and mouse. We did this for each letter, and I would narrate as he drew the line: “This is a mouse, which starts with the letter ‘M’, what letter does this start with?” getting him to sound out the letter. I liked being able to go through the workbook with him because I felt more comfortable working within a structure that was already laid out. I’m excited to get him to help him fine-tune his letter identification skills in the coming lessons.
