Tiba and I made it through a lot of material this time around. One of the things I've noticed throughout our time is that she isn't quite used to conventional expectations for filling out worksheets. Since worksheets are endless throughout middle and high school, I've targeted that as something simple that we can prepare her for while getting in some writing practice. This week I created maps of Africa with DRC as the focus, and showed her how to read the example map and transfer the country names by labeling a blank sample of the same map. Her handwriting is improving, as well as her speed in figuring out directions. We also did word searches featuring names of places in the DRC and Florida. We closed by reading a very, very simple story about a dog (since Tiba seems to really like dogs). Afterward I tried a mini comprehension check with questions about the story, and worked through going back into the text to find answers by looking for similar words to those in the questions. What's very touching about working with Tiba is that it's easy to see that she enjoys the challenge of learning, and can become very focused when she's tackling something.
