Date/Time: Saturday, September 10th, 10:30am.
Location: Strozier Library
Topic/Skill: Interviewing for goals, skill level, desired areas of practice
Soongyu and I met for the first time to discuss what she would like to work on and gauge where she was at right then. She was very curious about American familiarity with the Alamo, as she was completing a speaking presentation on it. I learned that she uses English mostly at CIES and sometimes at home with her husband. Her goal is to work on her speaking so that she'll be more comfortable making presentations at international conferences when she returns to Korea, and also for speaking with her husband (who is American).
Feedback provided to tutee: Not much feedback was needed as we were simply getting to know one another and finding out about Soongyu's goals. I made sure that Soongyu was comfortable with me correcting speech errors during our talks, and gave her some more information on the general ideas Americans have about the Alamo.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I remember thinking during this session that sometimes gauging skill level can be incredibly difficult. I tried to pinpoint errors, but at the time it was very hard to focus on that while I was trying to find out more about Soongyu. It helped me to try harder in future sessions so that our time would hopefully benefit Soongyu better.
