Date/Time: Sunday, September 11th, 10:30am.
Location: The tables outside Strozier Library
Topic/Skill: Speaking
Soongyu and I didn't realize that Strozier doesn't open until 12:30pm on Sundays, so we settled on a bench out front to chat and plan our future sessions. She wanted to focus on speaking, so we decided to alternate conversing sessions and timed speaking practice sessions. This time we simply spoke English together, discussing whatever crossed our minds. I listened for her trouble areas so we could attend them as we spoke. She also shared her finished presentation on the Alamo with me to make sure it flowed nicely, which it did.
Feedback provided to tutee: Some coaching on word choice, gendered pronouns, and word forms. Soongyu did not often make mistakes, but I saw what she was saying in our first session when she mentioned having error habits.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: As we've seen in the textbook, speakers from a particular country will obviously have trouble in areas that may not exist in their L1. This session reinforced that, as Soongyu had trouble not adding a vowel sound onto words that end in a consonant, which can be a common trouble area for English learners from South Korea.
