Today’s lesson had several highlights. Dojun and I met on what was
a Friday night for me and a Saturday morning for him. During our vocabulary
review I learned that he did not eat breakfast. This came into play later on in
our vocabulary lesson of the day in which I asked him "what are some
activities that you do subsequent to waking up in the morning?" To which
he replied "I brush my teeth because I don't eat breakfast." Although
we had a bit of a laugh in the beginning of our lesson, the tone changed to a
more serious one as we discussed and practiced the word “perspective.” While attempting
to have him use the word productively, I asked him if he had ever been in a
situation in which he had a different perspective than someone else. He went
silent for a bit, I think he wasn’t sure if he wanted to be honest or not. I
don’t think he wanted to offend me or go in too deeply on what may be a controversial
topic. Regardless, he told me that a lot of people in South Korea tend to be
divided on the subject of the United States’ military influence. Apparently
since North Korea has created their own version of a nuclear weapon, some
people feel as though South Korea should be able to take care of itself, while
others prefer the extra help of the United States. When I asked him which side
he was on, Dojun said "I don’t want anyone to have nuclear weapons
because I prefer peace." I told him that I truly respected his perspective. I was very impressed because he not only spoke well in his explanation of his view, his view itself was well spoken.
