After a wonderful lesson from the night before, Dojun and I
decided to meet again Sunday morning my time. This has become our usual meeting
time. Our lesson began with
a brief discussion to allow Dojun to lower his affective filter. After finishing
a brief review of our last lesson in which I have him respond through speaking or writing using the words in sentences with context. From there we move on to new vocabulary for that day based off what he knows and doesn't know. This way he could go beyond the words he knows by learning the synonyms and antonyms which
he hasn't been exposed to. However, in a case like today in which he said that he already knew the word "gullible," it was clear that we needed to focus on the word in question and add a new vocabulary word to the class. The way he had defined gullible was more along the lines of a person who is naive. Together we worked out the differences between the words, as ones of similar natures can often be confusing. We then took turns making our own sentences using the words through our dialogue.
Ultimately through this process of evaluating what his prior knowledge and exposure to a word is
I am able to add and exchange words to better shape what he needs. At first I had thought he had needed to know more words used in business in order to help him with his job. However, I found that he already knew most of them. For this reason, I focused more on words that I would have learned when I was growing up. Common yet "big" words as my younger self would say. Dojun is very advanced so it is necessary that I keep him challenged.
