Monday
October 3rd I met with John. We had a decent amount to talk about since I had
not seen him for two weeks. He shared with me his experience at the FSU engineer
fair where he interacted with many students and companies. He currently has a master’s
in Metallurgical engineering and is a part of the Latin American Engineering
society who had asked him to participate. He is also making strides to make it
easier to work in the united states by getting U.S. paper work that shows his
degree is equivalent to one here. We then spoke about the recent vote in
Colombia (his home country) where the people rejected the peace treaty proposed
by the government and FARC. He explained his point of view that the people want
peace but that the treaty would not have held the FARC criminals accountable.
They would be forgiven for killing thousands of people and not questioned about
any of the drug trafficking they had participated in. John's explanation made
me realize that the people were correct in rejecting this peace deal. The
crimes of this organization, particularly on this level cannot be erased.
