I met Matthew for the second time in the same week on the 30th to
make up for missed sessions. He had not yet started at his new school so we
once again chose a book that he could read. This time I decided to use an
extensive approach by allowing him to read as much as he wanted and give me a
general summary at the end. I felt that continually stopping him and asking him
pointed questions was pushing him away from wanting to read. When I was his age
I loved to read and learned so much from the different books I devoured. I think
that acquiring a love for reading will then translate into higher reading
skills.
This time he
seemed to enjoy the experience much more, I did not have to do anything to keep
him on track. He would often read past points where he was supposed to give me
a summary because he was so engrossed in the book. While his summaries were not
as detailed as I wanted them to be I only asked a few guiding questions to get
him to divulge more information.
After reading a
few chapters I asked him to write out a summary answering three questions:
What was happening
in the story?
How did this
happen?
What do you think
is going to happen?
Once he finished
this assignment I read through it with him and corrected his grammatical
errors. I also talked to him about making the ideas flow better together and
other important writing skills.
