Remi TS #8

I met with Matthew on the 28th of September. He is currently transitioning schools since the family has moved to a different neighborhood. As such he did not have any homework to do. Since we meet in the public library and his mother wants him to work on reading I decided to let him choose a book that I would approve and to read the first chapter. I decided to make this an intensive reading activity. After two or three pages I asked him to summarize what he had just read. During his initial summaries he missed many important details so I asked pointed questions. Often he had difficulty answering these which indicated that he may have been reading without paying attention. To remedy this I indicated a paragraph or a page where the answer could be found and asked him to read it again to find the correct answer.

He did not seem to enjoy this activity at all and was very reluctant to keep working. I had to struggle to keep him on track or to explain vocabulary to him. He does not enjoy reading very much and I think that my intensive approach made it even less desirable to him.
