I
met with John on Monday the 10th. A recent event that occurred was the
Colombian president being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Since I had talked to
him about the peace deal being voted down last week I was interested to hear
his opinions on this new development. While he thought that the
peace deal was not a good one he did respect the President and all of his efforts.
This does not mean that the President has done the right things, only that he
showed true dedication to an issue he deemed important. Other developments in John’s
life was that he has been looking into PhD. programs, trying to get his degrees
from Colombia to be accepted here. He will also need to take the GRE and TOFL
tests in addition to finding a professor who is willing to work with him.
John seems to appreciate the freedoms
of the United States. He spoke a lot about feeling as if he could not do much
in Colombia but that here he saw so many opportunities. If he finds a program
and is accepted, he is thinking of staying and trying to become a U.S. citizen.
