I met with Matthew and continued to work on the
packet from last week. This time he had just come from swimming and was visibly
tiered. As a result, it was much more difficult to keep him focused and on
task. He had also obviously not gone over any of the packet recently so we had
to quickly go over and review it so that he could answer the questions. Once he
got rolling it was a bit easier to get him to concentrate. I did have to practice
how to correctly skim and pick up key words again but this time the process was
much quicker.
Once he finished the rest of the short answers he
was able to zip though the multiple choice. He did make a few mistakes reading
the questions resulting in wrong answers. For these I pointed out that he had
answered incorrectly and asked him to read the question again carefully. For
every one he was able to get the answer correct once he understood it. This
only reinforced my thoughts that he needs to slow down a bit when he reads and
take his time. At the moment is seems as if he reads one out of every three or
four words.
