After
his classes I met with Shu on Wednesday the 5th. It was during his finals week
so he chose a reading piece to go over. It was an article from the Economist
summarizing the first presidential debate. When I read through it I realized
that he probably would not have the cultural knowledge of American political
debates to correctly understand the various references. Together we went
through the article paragraph by paragraph. I asked him to summarize each paragraph
and to pick out most important points. I also provided him with background
knowledge on the different idiomatic phrases.
One particular reference that I had to
explain was the film “A Few Good Men” in which Jack Nicholas plays a General
willing to sacrifice individuals to do what he felt was right. His character is
compared to Trump in the sense that they are both head strong and are willing
to go to extremes to accomplish what they want. However even without the explicit
knowledge of the film Shu was still able to discern the inherent bias of the
article against Trump.
