October 13, 6:30pm. Today i met with Ruyi for a listening questionnaire. I have been hearing more and more lately in the news about white-washing in media, so i started out by asking her if she knew what it was and if she knew of any such movies or shows. She told me that she had done something similar in one of her classes, so it made the schema portion a bit easier. I then showed her some movie trailers where white-washing was occurring. The new Ghost in the shell movie which the main character is a Japanese girl in the original show is being played by the american actor Scarlett Johansson. She did not think that this is a good thing because there are plenty of talented ethnic people who could have played her. We then talked about beauty standards in the states versus those in china. What we as americans may see as a beautiful Chinese girl, they see her as ugly, because she may have tried to look more american.
