Feedback provided to tutee: During the session I asked Dojun to repeat anything that is unclear to me or disrupts communication. The lack of clarity is generally due to incorrect grammar or pronunciation. In order to address these errors I just ask him "what did you say?" or repeat back the part of the sentence that I did comprehend.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Most of this tutoring session consisted of conversations about current events and cultural differences. From my tutoring sessions with Dojun I feel most of what I am learning is that mere exposure and conversational practice is beneficial for a student at his level. My biggest concern however is that the unstructured conversational method may not be teaching him all that I would want to teach him. However, I have to remind myself of Snow's advice that the best practice for speaking and listening skills is the interaction itself. Also the format of our tutoring sessions were laid out at the beginning of the semester (when I was quite unknowledgeable). At that time Dojun expressed that he would prefer just an informal approach and so that is what we have been doing. I did notice this session that Dojun's speaking skills have improved greatly from our first tutoring session. Though I'm sure his motivation and exposure from two other tutors greatly adds to his level of improvement.
