Date/Time: October 5, 7:30-8:30pm
Location: PJ's desk
Topic/Skill: continents and oceans, idioms/ listening and speaking
Feedback provided to tutee: During this session PJ and I reviewed all his different continents and oceans as well as their spelling. To make it fun and interesting for him we found a couple silly songs about each of the different bodies of land and water. At first PJ couldn't differentiate between the Atlantic, Arctic, and Southern oceans but then after some repetition, he identified all of them with ease. We also briefly finished up a science worksheet he had a couple errors on. It was mostly math based so I reassured him that it would be easy for him as long as he looked at the directions carefully. Finally we played a review game to go over all the idioms he learned last week. At first he hesitated in remembering several of them but he finally aced them all and earned himself his ice cream incentive.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that different modes of stimulation and repetition with enthusiasm is truly key when working with a child tutee. Although at the beginning of our sessions I thought that treating him as an adult would make him more serious about the work, I quickly learned that kids just need to learn in a different way. A way in which interest is grabbed through lots of modes of stimulation but also lots of encouragement and positive feedback.
