Ben TS #4

I met with Shukuru for the third time this Wednesday. I wanted to continue to work on the alphabet with him and this time I came armed with ABC’s flash cards. We started by spelling out his name using the flash cards. I showed him how ‘S’ makes a sss sound like a snake would make, and how the combination ‘Sh’ makes a “Shhh!” sound. The Shhh sound made him laugh so I think that it stuck. After going through the letters of his name we then spelled out his last name. After that, he spelled out his sister’s names on his own. It seemed to me from this exercise that he was better at knowing the sounds that a letter makes than identifying the name for each letter. For instance, he knew ‘s’ made a sss sound but wanted to call it “essé” I’m going to get some advice from a friend who teaches 1st graders this week on tutoring Shukuru.
